Medium-bodied with an intense ruby color, this Northern Italian variety displays a strong varietal character with aromas of cherries and raspberries. We are one of only two vineyards in New Jersey that grow and produce this exceptional grape. Our oak-aged Barbera is a well structured red wine with balanced tannins for a long, smooth finish. Ideal for tomato-based dishes, grilled meat and lamb. Serve at room temperature.
VINTNER'S COMMENT:
This is a native grape from my mother's region outside Milan, in the Piedmonte region, on the border of Lombardi, is close to the village where my mother is from. There are three types:
- Barbera D'Asti,
- Monferrato, or
- Barbato
Monferato is the varietal that originates close to my mother's village. I'm especially attached to this wine because of its origin and my upbringing. I grew up drinking, smelling, and even eating it! My grandfather used to put Barbera in everything. In soup or risotto he'd always add a splash in. He said it tied the foods flavors together. And when gathering with friends at a neighborhood bar, it was the standard wine on the table. So it's a great feeling for me to grow and produce this grape now, in New Jersey. I figured that because Northern Italy is colder than other locations, that it would grow well in New Jersey. And it's my understanding that for now at least, we're one of only two New Jersey wineries that grow this versatile grape. One prevalent characteristic is that its considerably high in acidity, and relatively lower in tannins than most other red wines. It's a wine that pairs well with acidic type foods, like tomato-based pasta, pizza. The acidity is what gives it's unique spicey, even peppery, taste. This is my favorite red wine. But beyond my strong childhood memories, I think this wine has its own personality and is very versatile: from being the everyday light, freshly made wine of the farmers and being grown in every backyard in Piedmont, to a well structured, aged, sophisticated wine that can sit shoulder to shoulder with any other red wine on the shelf.

BEST BARBERA
The guy at the winery who suggested it was spot on - it's peppery and full of character. Try it next time for something beyond the usual red.
