A bottle of Sangiovese wine produced by Hopewell Valley Vineyards - one of many New Jersey wineries

Our Sangiovese is fruity and naturally acidic with nuances of ripe cherry, blackberry, and minerals. Deep ruby red color, medium body and balanced tannins make this robust Tuscan wine an ideal companion to meat, lamb, and tomato based dishes.

Vintner's Comment:

Sangiovese is the base of a lot of Tuscan wines, all with different names, but certainly with Chianti, Brunello, etc. It's is one of the main ingredients of Chianti and/or Chianti Classico and Giorgio's vineyard is nestled near the picturesque Castellina di Chianti, which is traditionally a Chianti Classico wine region.

We source our grapes from my brother Giorgio's vineyard in Tuscany. He has a very small production of about only ten acres, which allows him to strive for the most meticulous and exceptionally high quality grapes and wine. The interesting thing is that we sort of do half the process here, and half there by using two fermentation processes.  We do primary fermentation in Tuscany and we ship in the winter months here to our New Jersey winery, and then we do a secondary malolactic fermentation here, and then we age it in oak for it to fully mature and then bottle age it here as well.

Because this grape is very similar to what's needed to grow and produce a good Chianti wine, we don't even try to grow it here. It needs much warmer weather than what New Jersey wineries can offer - even coastal vineyards would have trouble producing consistently high quality grapes for wine production. So you don't find it offered much by East Coast wineries.

This Tuscan style wine pairs well with meats, but I think it works especially well with tomato based dishes, and game, like in Tuscany it's traditionally a wine paired with cinghiale, (wild boar).  It's hard to go wrong at dinner with a good Sangiovese on the table!
