A bottle of Porto Rosso Red Port wine produced by Hopewell Valley Vineyards - one of many New Jersey wineries

Sold Out!

A distinctive black cherry nose with hints of caramel, dry fruit and vanilla, our deep-brownish red port is an ideal complement to aged cheeses and chocolate based desserts. Serve at room temperature.

Vintner's Dinner:

Our Porto Rosso is unique because it brings out the intensity and the structure and the color of the Chambourcin in a delicious port-style wine. And I think that Chambourcin makes for an excellent red port, excellent even! Especially with the vibrant color, it's a darker toned port than what you usually see produced by other varieties of red wines.

Our Porto Rosso is made with our Chambourcin grapes. We still produce it traditionally by adding brandy to the fermenting wine must, just like with our Porto Bianco, until we get 18% alcohol and 8% sugar. We use a pure brandy, not an aged brandy so it's neutral not to overpower the flavor of the wine. We use 160 proof, which is 80% alcohol, and its very clean and clear. There are different types of port, by color and by aging method.

We age red port for at least three years in oak barrels, and then at least two years in the bottle. It's more of a ruby-style port, versus a tawny-style port.

Interestingly, for those who want to learn about port wine: It's name originates from the town of Port in Portugal.Traditionally it was created during the War between France and England. The Portuguese started adding brandy to preserve the wine during exports to England. It turned out to be that the extra alcohol stopped the fermentation but left enough residual sugar. They discovered that this stuff lasts forever! That's why you don't need to backfill it in the bottle, like you do for regular wine, to avoid oxidation.
