A bottle of Merlot wine produced by Hopewell Valley Vineyards - one of many New Jersey wineries

Sold Out!

Medium-bodied with a deep red color. our oak-aged Merlot displays good complexity and structure with flavors of cherries, plums, and well balanced tannins. An excellent complement to grilled and roasted beef, cheeses, rack of lamb, and roasted duck. Serve at room temperature.

Vintner's Commentary:

Merlot is one of the pillars of wine that you can expect most vineyards to produce or grow. We've done really well with our merlot in certain competitions. To win best of class with a merlot wine is such an honor. Even with our Chambourcin awards we've been extremely happy and honored with the positive turnout in competitions...but with Merlot, Merlot is everywhere! So to win Best in Class for a merlot wine is quite an amazing feat indeed. In the middle price range, there's a million merlots!

Merlot grows fairly well in coastal New Jersey, but especially well in neighboring Long Island where we actually source our grapes.  Because it has a good body and tannic structure, I like to pair Merlot with dishes that are high in protein, like grilled meats, or cheeses, because protein and tannins go well together. Tannins break down protein, so it softens the meal, without losing its flavor's integrity. Tannic acids bond with the amino acids in protein, so that's how it helps you digest. Merlot usually has a good body and tannic structure. And it's one of the most versatile wines in the world. It can be blended with just about everything, a lot of blends. From Supertuscans, to Bordeaux, to Syrah blends.
